How is the pregnancy monitored during
the surrogacy process?

When Pregnancy Becomes a Reality, a New Chapter Begins in Building Your Family

Confirming the pregnancy is one of the most meaningful moments in a surrogacy program. After months of planning, medical coordination, legal structuring, gestational carrier selection, and embryo transfer, a completely different stage begins: supporting the pregnancy through to birth.

From this point forward, the priorities change, and the surrogacy process focuses on the gestational carrier’s well-being, the baby’s development, and ongoing communication with the intended parents.

At ALUMA, we support intended parents from Mexico, the United States, Canada, Spain, and other countries, including heterosexual couples, LGBTQ+ couples, married couples, and single intended parents. We work closely with obstetricians, reproductive medicine specialists, fertility clinics, and the other professionals involved in the program so that each family receives clear and timely information and can experience this stage with greater peace of mind and confidence.

What Changes After Pregnancy Is Confirmed in a Surrogacy Program?

Once the medical team has confirmed the pregnancy, a new phase of the program begins, with the primary focus on monitoring the pregnancy and supporting everyone involved throughout the months ahead.

For many intended parents, especially those living outside Mexico, this stage can bring new questions. Their concerns are no longer centered on the embryo transfer or the pregnancy test result, but rather on how the baby is developing, which prenatal checkups will continue, how communication with the gestational carrier will be maintained, and what decisions may need to be made as the pregnancy progresses.

Our experience has shown us that organized communication and continuous follow-up help intended parents understand each stage and prepare in advance for the decisions that may arise during the pregnancy.

What Role Does Psychological Support Play During This New Stage?

Pregnancy can bring different emotions and concerns for the gestational carrier and the intended parents. The gestational carrier may have concerns about her well-being and the baby’s development, while intended parents may feel increasingly excited about the arrival of their child, but may also have questions, fears, or concerns as they become more aware that the birth is approaching.

For this reason, from the beginning of the program, ALUMA’s team of psychologists provides support to both the gestational carrier and the intended parents, helping them navigate the different situations that may arise during pregnancy and addressing their emotional needs as the process progresses.

The Pregnancy Continues Under Medical Care

After the pregnancy is confirmed, clinical care remains under the responsibility of the obstetrician and the specialists overseeing prenatal care. Depending on the circumstances of each pregnancy, the medical team may schedule the consultations and evaluations needed to monitor the baby’s development and the gestational carrier’s health.

During this stage, care may include regular prenatal appointments, obstetric ultrasounds, laboratory tests, fetal growth assessments, monitoring of maternal and fetal well-being, and any other evaluation the physician considers necessary as the pregnancy progresses. The frequency and type of testing will always depend on the specific needs of each case and the recommendations of the medical specialist.

This ongoing monitoring makes it possible to continuously assess each pregnancy and identify any situation that, according to the gynecologist’s professional judgment, requires additional evaluation or care.

Our agency’s role is to serve as a link so that when the medical team recommends an additional test, an evaluation by another specialist, or any measure related to the gestational carrier’s care, ALUMA can step in, keep the intended parents informed about what is happening, and facilitate what is needed so the situation can be properly addressed.

Walking Alongside the Gestational Carrier Throughout the Pregnancy

The gestational carrier’s well-being is essential to the proper development of the pregnancy and is an important part of the ongoing support we provide throughout the program.

While the obstetrician and medical team oversee the clinical progress of the pregnancy, our team supports the gestational carrier in organizing the different stages of the process, helps coordinate appointments when necessary, follows communication with the medical specialists, and remains attentive to needs that may arise during the pregnancy.

This support gives the gestational carrier a consistent point of contact for the organization of the program while also providing peace of mind to the intended parents, who know that there is ongoing coordination among the professionals involved.

For our entire team of specialists, the gestational carrier’s well-being, peace of mind, and safety are a priority because they are essential to an experience that should be approached with respect and consideration.

That is why it is important for her to feel valued and heard during this particularly significant stage of the surrogacy process, knowing that she has a team that remains attentive to her needs.

How Do We Keep Intended Parents Informed During the Pregnancy?

What Does a Surrogacy Agency Do as the Pregnancy Progresses?

Confirming the pregnancy does not mean ALUMA’s work stops. Instead, this marks the beginning of a stage in which different aspects of the surrogacy program must continue to be addressed as the pregnancy progresses, allowing us to anticipate needs that will arise in the months ahead.

During this period, our team remains attentive to the administrative and legal matters that must be addressed before birth, making sure each step is handled at the appropriate time and preparing the documentation needed for the subsequent stages.

We also monitor the needs that arise as the birth approaches so that intended parents can prepare in advance rather than having to address important matters hurriedly when the time comes.

For international families, this work is particularly important because many continue their daily lives outside Mexico while the pregnancy takes place here. Having a team remain attentive to these matters allows them to move forward with the necessary preparations even when they are not physically in the country.
